The ability to understand and manipulate language confidently and competently is vital to enable progress in all areas of learning.

Our aspiration, for our pupils, is to equip each and every one with this confidence and competence.

Our curriculum aims to marry solid, traditional teaching methods with the best of current thinking: for example, pupils follow a reading scheme until they are ready to graduate to making independent, ‘free’ reading choices; they are also equipped with a strong understanding of phonics which is widely advocated as the preferred method for acquiring good reading and spelling skills.

At each key stage, the encouragement of creative thought is hugely important to us and pupils often share their work in assembly, performing poems or reading aloud pieces of prose. No matter what the ability level, pride in their achievements is evident.

Whilst feedback from the teacher, through marking and discussion, remains important in our school, we also encourage pupils to reflect on their own work through self and peer appraisal, making them more independent learners.

We aim to engender a love of language and create an exciting learning environment where each child can achieve his or her potential.

Pupils are proud of their achievements and exhibit a high level of self-esteem.
