Drama

Drama is a flourishing subject at Plymouth College.

We have had considerable success with the AS, A2 and GCSE courses over the past years and teach Drama to all year groups. Drama GCSE currently uses the WJEC exam board. There are practical and written exams and homework is set on a weekly basis. GCSE Drama is a course that offers students an opportunity to be creative; develop self-confidence and work within a team to gain knowledge and understanding of the theatre.

The course offers a combination of written and practical work, based on the exploration of plays and practitioners through seeing live theatre, studying scripts and participating in workshops. Coursework includes creating live performances by the students, consisting of devising a piece of theatre from a given stimulus (a painting, a poem or a title) and bringing an extract of a published script to life from page to stage. Both projects are undertaken in groups of between 2 - 6 and both are supported by written work.

A written exam is taken in Year 11 which focuses on a text that has been studied in class. Students are expected to develop skills as an actor, a director and a designer for this exam. Students are encouraged and expected to see live performances throughout the course to enhance their appreciation and understanding of the play as a form of entertainment and education.

We are so lucky to have the Theatre Royal in Plymouth, offering both commercial and experimental theatre on our doorstep. Many West End shows either start or finish in Plymouth, allowing us all to see top class theatre right here.
