EAL

All international students are assessed prior to their arrival at Plymouth College to assess their levels of English.

This is important as English will be the means of learning across the curriculum and for statutory assessments. Specialist EAL tuition and continued support from the Department is available during the school working day, throughout your child’s time at Plymouth College. Our students are also prepared for the internationally recognized IELTS exams for entry into the Sixth Form as well as for university entrance.

English is taught at different levels - depending on the needs of the student - either in small groups or on a one-to-one basis. The teachers in the department are qualified and experienced in teaching EAL in an academic environment. Our aim is to help all of our students to use English confidently and competently in a range of contexts. The Head of Department is also the International Student Mentor. In this role, she works closely with colleagues in the boarding houses, with teachers, with school nurses and with parents to provide the best pastoral care for your child.
