Drama and Theatre Studies’ AS and A levels are studied using the AQA exam board and involve both practical work (acting, directing and design) and theory (studying the work of significant theatre practitioners; studying and performing play texts; devising a piece of theatre for performance and seeing a wide range of performances in the theatre).

We work in an open drama studio that has been fitted out as a mini-theatre with lights, seating and sound. For exam work, both the drama studio and the Meade King Hall provide the space and technical facilities suitable for this subject. In addition to studying play scripts, such as ‘Oh What a Lovely War’ by Littlewood, students are encouraged to become actors, designers and directors for the play scripts ‘Our Countries Good’ by Wertenbaker and ‘A Servant for Two Masters’ by Goldoni. This is complimented by practical work in performance by the students.

Students are expected to see live performances throughout the course to enhance their appreciation and understanding of the play as a form of entertainment and education and to inspire their own creativity. The Theatre Royal offers both commercial and experimental theatre 'at home' with many West End shows starting in Plymouth. Our links with the theatre are excellent and it is a fantastic resource for the students
