Ten Tors

Plymouth College pupils have been taking part in the Ten Tors Challenge for about 40 years.

The Dartmoor event sees mixed teams of six cover 35, 45 or 55 miles over a weekend in May. Participants have to carry all their food and equipment and make their own camps on the Saturday night. For the last few years Plymouth College has had 35 and 45 mile teams as well as had pupils take part in the Jubilee Challenge.

Starting in September, the students undertake eight training sessions, mostly day walks, on Sundays. In early March they do their first overnight camp followed by two full weekend expeditions. There is also a weekly after-school Ten Tors Club where they learn about route planning, navigation, tent pitching and cooking outdoors.

Competition for team places is fierce!

Seeing 2,400 young people setting off from Okehampton Camp at the start of Ten Tors is a sight to behold. For many participants it is a life-changing experience and they will remember the event with pride for the rest of their lives.
