Senior School Overview

Our Senior School is where we educate, enrich and empower pupils between the ages of 11 and 16. We strive for excellence in everything we do. Our primary aim is to excite and inspire our pupils intellectually and academically; to inculcate a genuine love of and desire for learning that will stay with them during their time at the College and throughout their lives.

He’s had a flying start, my son loves it and I feel that he is safe and secure and going to
achieve his full potential.

Pupils begin with our Key Stage 3 curriculum. Here we lay the foundations of subject knowledge and understanding but our emphasis is on the development of the intellectual skills and habits required for successful learning, alongside intellectual qualities such as creativity, curiosity and resilience. Our approach naturally evolves into a tailored, accelerated preparation GCSE.

It has been a fantastic experience for our daughter. My only regret is not looking at
Plymouth sooner.

Pupils then progress to Key Stage 4 where there is a clear and unadulterated focus on ensuring that every pupil achieves the best possible grades in their GCSE subjects. Our belief is that this is only possible with expert teaching in small classes. Only then are teachers able to really know each and every child as an individual and to offer them the tailored, bespoke education they need. We simply do not allow any child to be lost, left behind, unsupported or unchallenged. This is why pupils at Plymouth College make more academic progress than at any other school in the city.

Perfectly complementing this is our programme of pupil personal development. Our rich and varied programme of co-curricular activities, covering everything from performance and recreational sports to performing and creative arts to all forms of outdoor education, ensures that every pupil is able develop both existing and new interests, hobbies and skills. Furthermore, our pastoral care and wellbeing education are second-to-none. Pupils are supported and educated by their teachers in form groups and houses; by healthcare professionals in our wellbeing centre; through our diverse programme of PHSE lessons, seminars and events; and through our expert careers guidance programme that ensures that they make an informed and effective transition to the next stage of their education.
