CoachingAll coaches at Plymouth College are fully qualified and undergo regular ongoing professional development. The department follows a clear pathway that is designed to ensure that all players are accomplished in a core set of multi positional skills, augmented by position specific awareness and skill requirements, such as scrummaging, goal kicking, scrum half skills, high ball ‘bomb diffusing’ and so forth.
The current Director of Rugby, Richard Edwards, has been in position for 10 seasons, having previously been part of the First XV coaching staff at Llandovery College. During his time at Llandovery College, Richard worked with up and coming welsh players such as Alun Wyn Jones ( a current 80 cap international and Lions Test Captain in the third test of 2013), Emyr Phillips ( current Senior Welsh international hooker)and Dan George (English premiership player with London Welsh and Gloucester).Richard has coached schoolboy sides to numerous achievements with those below representing a cross section:
- Winners of the Under 16s National schools Sevens at Oxford.
- Runners up at the Under 18s National Schools Sevens at Oxford.
- Finalists at the Welsh schools Cup Under 18s fifteen a side.
- Plate winners at the inaugural Under 18s fifteen a side ‘Super Sixteen’ Competition.
- Four times county finalists at Under 18 (2 wins, 2 losses).
- Regional Winners in the Daily Mail Cup and quarter-finalists nationally.
- Semi-finalists in the Daily Mail vase national competition.
- First XV winning the Rugby World team of the Month Award.
Richard Thompson is Joint First XV coach and has coached at the College for 12 years, 9 of those at First XV level. During that time he has provided many players with top level guidance, with Henry Slade of England Saxons and Exeter Chiefs being the most high profile player to have benefitted from Richard’s experience. Richard represented England at Under 19 level, was a player at Plymouth Albion for 12 years as a senior and captained them for three seasons. He was the record holder of Plymouth Albion Caps for a number of years, having started in excess of 300 games for the city’s top side.
Other coaches within the Department include Matt Byrne, who has recently joined PMC from Knox Grammar in Australia, where he worked in the Sports Department alongside the former Scotland coach, Matt Williams. Matt has a strong background in S and C, providing many players with training guidance and, most importantly, appropriate education about how to train effectively and safely. Further expertise is provided by Kevin Hall, MBE. Kevin did a full career in the Royal Navy as a PTI before joining Plymouth College and provides weekly sessions for senior squad members. He also takes players through specific programmes on a one to one basis and has been a cornerstone of the fitness programme at Plymouth in recent years.
