Gary Pepperell MbyRes, ASCC

Head of Strength & Conditioning

What is your professional background?

I am currently the Head of Strength and Conditioning for both Plymouth College and Plymouth Leander Swimming Association. Educated at the University of Gloucestershire for both my undergraduate in Sports Strength and Conditioning and Masters in Sport and Exercise Science Research, I bring a plethora of knowledge and experience from a range of sports. Having previously worked with the Cornish Pirates RFC, Athlete Academy (Gloucester City Swim Club + Crypt School, Gloucester) and Truro and Penwith College, has enabled me to develop a range of coaching techniques to adapt to all sports and athletes.

What is your sporting background?

My own sporting career started with football at junior level before realising my stature was much more suited to rugby late in secondary school. Playing for Truro and Penwith College and Penzance and Newlyn RFC is where I developed my love for sport and the team culture that is encompassed in Rugby. Moving on to University I took a break from Rugby and was focussed on gaining coaching exposure from Year 1. The University’s weightlifting club was an integral part of my University life. Where this is a very individual sport, the team element in a gym to motivate and better each other is second to none.

What is your professional background?

I studied at Hartpury university completing a Bsc(hons) in strength and conditioning from this I got involved in a variety of coaching from getting S&C experience with Gloucester Rugby player development programme to Churchdown and rendcomb school doing fundamental S&C for a variety of sports and standard P.E classes. In my Final year of university, I assisted in delivering the British weightlifting level 2 Qualification for the 2nd year university students. From these experiences I bring a range of knowledge and techniques from working with students from Year 7-11 and students of university level.

What is your sporting background?

As I was growing up I trained in a variety of sports such as football, tennis and swimming but it was in secondary school when I developed more of a love for rugby. This carried through to university playing for the 2nd team at Hartpury. More recently I have found myself getting involved with Olympic weightlifting and the very controversial ‘Crossfit’. Being involved with a box in Gloucester the team environment and competitive nature of the sport appealed to me and this has carried through to now.

I completed a BSc in Exercise & Sport Science with Honours from the University of Queensland, Australia and have been in the Strength & Conditioning field for the last 3 years. During my undergraduate studies I completed a number of internships working with athletes from all various sporting backgrounds, abilities and competitive levels. This has provided me with a breadth of knowledge when it comes to training athletes. For 2 of those years I was a strength & conditioning coach for St Peters Lutheran College; a sporting school linked with Australia’s top ranked swimming club St Peters Western.

What is your sporting background?

Throughout my high school years my love of sport resulted in me trying my hand at nearly every sport out on offer. However, football (soccer) & volleyball were the two sports I specialized in. As I began my university career I transitioned from devoting much of my time playing sport to devoting much of my time to coaching and practicing my craft as a S&C coach.
