Academic History

Three hundred and fifty years on from the Great Plague, Year 8 historians spent a busy day learning about the remedies available in Stuart England.

The barber surgeon tackled headaches with a hammer, constipation with a very agricultural funnel (!) and dental problems with a grit and determination to extract the tooth come what may. For his part, the witch doctor used plants, rats and instruments of torture to resolve problems with the spirits.

Finally, Mistress Agnes tested the soldiers' body armour for safety, by firing a musket at it and seeing what happened, and then ensured the students were smartly dressed in their best Stuart clothes.

The day finished with the firing of a musket on the playing fields and a fond farewell to our visiting historians. A great day was had by all.
