Sixth former, Charity Brifaut, writes about competing in Plymouth’s You’re Hired competition…
Four Plymouth College students - Amy Warnock, Jess Prosser, Charity Brifaut and Moritz Backu - competed in the final of You’re Hired, a competition to win the title of Plymouth’s most employable seventeen year old.
On the first day about fifty people from all the different schools in the city met at the train station, where they were put into teams and given an introduction and the brief. Their task was to “imagine that the train station is going under reconstruction; come up with a design that will help bring more business into the city making it more of a destination”.
Each team had to create a report and prepare a presentation explaining the design and the plan. They also had to talk about finances and resources such as IT, rail engineering, marketing, transport and access. This task would normally have taken a team of thirty professionals two months to complete; a team of about eight, brand new to the industry, did it less than two days!
Our highest achiever was Moritz Backu who not only won ‘Best future IT professional award’ from Atos but also came second overall. Charity Brifaut was project manager of the winning team. It was a great experience and a fantastic opportunity to meet new people and learn key skills for a lifetime.
