A Euro café, interactive science displays, musical interludes, drama performances and sport demonstrations are just some of the activities on offer at the Plymouth College Open Morning on Saturday 3 October.  The independent school will open its doors at the Senior School at Ford Park from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.  Visitors will have the chance to look around the school and meet staff and pupils.  There will be a welcome from the Headmaster, Jonathan Standen, at 9.45 a.m. and another at 10.45 a.m.

Founded in 1877, Plymouth College is a city-based day and boarding school providing education for boys and girls aged 3 to 18.  A forward-looking school with a successful history, this summer saw a good set of results at A Level, International Baccalaureate and GCSE.  More than 10% of A Level students achieved at least 3 A grades and the International Baccalaureate saw a best ever overall point score of 34.125, the equivalent of more than 3 A*s at A Level.  Nearly half of all grades at GCSE were A*/A.

Business and Economics is a particular strength with pupils from the school gaining the top mark in the country in GCSE, A Level and DipFS on a number of occasions.  Plymouth College also leads the way in national business competitions, having won eleven in the last decade.  It is now a Young Enterprise Centre of Excellence and its Entrepreneurial Society attracts top speakers such as Levi Roots, creator of Reggae Reggae Sauce.

The school is equally proud of its enriching extra-curricular programme, with activities ranging from music and drama to sports and outward bound.  The recent school production of ‘Matilda’ was energetic and fun, while the Year 7s will be enjoying overnight stays at Whiteworks on Dartmoor in the coming weeks.  On the sports front, the school caters for all abilities and fields teams in rugby, hockey, netball and cricket as well as a number of other sports.  It also runs a performance athlete programme which has seen swimmers, divers, pentathletes and fencers competing at World, European and National events this summer.

The school boasts a mix of cultures with pupils from the Far East, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Locally, pupils come from Plymouth, the South Hams, West Devon and South East Cornwall, many using the school bus service.

“Our academic curriculum is strong and our great results continue to endorse this,” said Headmaster, Jonathan Standen.  “We also believe in the importance of the wider curriculum, which is reflected in the diverse mix of artistic, musical, dramatic, sporting and outward bound activities on offer.  Everyone is able to find success and enjoyment along a broad front. Our pupils are happy in their learning and there is a great community spirit here from which lasting friendships evolve.”
