Broadway and West End star, Michael Ball OBE, visited Plymouth College earlier this week to open the school’s new drama room, the Michael Ball Studio. The former pupil, who hasn’t been back to the school since he left 35 years ago, is starring in Mack and Mabel at Plymouth’s Theatre Royal.

The Michael Ball Studio was built with help from TR2’s Sebastian Soper.  The new space, which has a performance area, raised seating and lighting, is in addition to the school’s main theatre. Mr Ball met current drama students and told them how it was a production of King Lear at the school that ignited his passion for the stage.  Remembering teachers and classmates, he said Plymouth College had helped him become the person he is today.

“We are delighted that Mr Ball was able to take time out of his busy schedule and come to Plymouth College”, said Headmaster, Jonathan Standen.  “It is an honour to be able to put his name to our fantastic new drama studio.

“The students were full of questions for him and were thrilled to have the opportunity to meet someone so successful who went to their school.  It showed them that if they are focussed and work hard, they too can achieve their dreams.”
