Plymouth College students have enjoyed a hugely successful expedition to Malawi this summer. Throughout the multifaceted elements of this demanding expedition, the students proved themselves to be mature and responsible. We enjoyed a day of exploration of the Zomba Plateau before heading to Mount Mulanje for a four-day trek. The ascent was steep and arduous, but the students stepped up to the challenge, and arrived as a group at the first hut.
For the remaining days the students navigated their way around the plateau, before heading down the mountain, to a safari after a night’s rest.
We were rewarded with an array of exotic animals such as elephants, often at close quarters, as well as enjoying the hippo and crocodiles, as storks flew overhead, while the sun set in a deep orange glow on the far bank of the river.
The primary objective of the expedition was to help the charity Medic Malawi with their ongoing operations: a hospital; orphanage; nursery and secondary schools. We had a rewarding week creating clay animals for the children in the nursery. Later we helped out around the nursery scrubbing, cleaning, filling holes in the walls and even painted some of the classrooms in the secondary school. Lastly we enjoyed a well-earned day of relaxation on the shores of Lake Malawi and were treated to a feast of freshly caught fish, by the light of a roaring beach fire.
