Children ‘dress up’ at Saltram - 13/5/10
Published: 13 May, 2010
The Year One classes visited Saltram House recently as part of
their History topic about life over one hundred years
ago.
They were able to see what it would have been like to live in
the beautiful stately home and to work hard as a servant. In
the morning 'Mrs Strict', the housekeeper, took the children to the
Steward's room to tell them all about the hard working
servants. They also visited the kitchens and the laundry to
see how differently things were done.
In the activities room the children were able to dress up in
period clothes - one of the highlights was sitting in a sedan
chair. After a picnic lunch on the lawn, everyone was taken
on a tour of the upstairs of the house to see how the gentry lived.
All agreed that they would rather not be one of the
servants!
