Year 2 pupils at Plymouth College Preparatory School had a very
exciting trip to Greenbank Fire Station earlier this week.

They started with a tour of the station, followed by a talk
about how to stay safe and what to do in an emergency.

The firemen showed the children the equipment on the fire
engine, let them sit inside the cab and try on uniform.
Everyone then went outside and all the children had a go at
squirting the hose. Some of the class got a bit wet!

Head of Infants, Sally Raymond-Jones, said: "The children had a
fantastic morning and were still very excited when they got back to
school. They will now be writing stories and drawing pictures
about the visit.

"The firemen were brilliant and I can't thank them enough for
making it such a fun and informative visit."

The event for the co-ed day school for 2 ½ to 11 year olds is
taking place on Saturday 10th March 10 a.m. to 12
noon. The Headmaster, Chris Gatherer, will be giving a
welcome address at 10.15 a.m. Visitors will then be able to
go on a tour of the school and meet the teachers and
pupils.

Combining a healthy balance of high-quality academic study and a
broad range of fun activities, the school also offers a bus service
and free aftercare - nursery vouchers for three and four year olds
can be used for children attending the school's Kindergarten
department.

A major refurbishment in 2005 means that the Millfields-based
school now boasts specialist rooms for science, ICT, art, music and
design technology. It has spacious classrooms, a theatre,
purpose-built sports hall and a chapel. The latest addition
to facilities is a state-of-the-art Food Technology Centre, which
was opened late last year.

Headmaster,Chris Gatherer, said: "Our aim is to provide a safe
and happy environment in which our pupils can grow in confidence
and reach their full potential whatever their strengths. This
is crucial in helping them to prepare for the next steps of their
education and beyond.

"We hope that our Open Morning will give parents, grandparents
and children a glimpse of what life is really like at the Prep
School and that they will see first-hand why our pupils have a lot
to smile about."

Plymouth's Central Park to collect leaves and sticks. The
visit also involved splashing about in a lot of muddy puddles, much
to the delight of the children.

After having so much fun, they returned to school to make stick
men, stick sculptures and painted leaves.

As part of their history studies about the Victorians, Year 5
paid a visit to Lanhydrock House in Cornwall. The children were
divided into groups and got to dress up in a range of Victorian
costumes.

One group learned about being a servant in Victorian times and
looked at the vast kitchens while another experienced being a child
by exploring the nursery and playing with some of the toys. The
children found out all about the family who lived at Lanhydrock,
the Agar-Robarts, and were fascinated to hear about the lavish
lives they led.

The children also got to spend time in the gardens picking up
conkers!

It was a misty morning when the Year One classes arrived at
Wembury beach. However, as they began their 'Rockpool
Ramble', the sun began to shine.

The children spent a very productive morning finding most of the
creatures that they had been learning about in their science
lessons. They enjoyed seeing the plants and animals in their
natural habitat.

After a picnic lunch they explored the beach, looking at pebbles
and shells and making beach sculptures. When it was time to
go, soggy Wellington boots were removed and everyone headed back to
school.

of singing. The children remembered those less fortunate than
themselves in their prayers at the end of the service.

All the food was donated to the homeless charity, Shekinah

Designed in partnership with top chefs, the Tanner Brothers, the
state-of-the-art kitchen contains a series of child-sized cooking
stations. Each one is equipped with an oven and hob, large
work surface, sink and drawers filled with essential cooking
utensils. The adult-sized teacher's station is linked to a
webcam that feeds to screens around the room so that the children
can closely follow every detail of the teacher's cooking
demonstrations.

Located in the 'Round House', the specialist classroom has been
kitted out and decorated in the style of the Tanner Brothers'
leading Plymouth brasserie, Barbican Kitchen. Chris Tanner
was on hand to do the ribbon-cutting duties at the official
opening.

"We were asked several months ago if we would be interested
in becoming involved in the new food tech facility at Plymouth
College Prep School", said Chris. "Now, in such a short space
of time, a rundown disused building has been transformed into a
gastronomic temple! This is a fantastic addition to the
facilities and a perfect space to teach the children about
everything foodie! It can only ever be beneficial as they learn
about food, where it comes from and how important it is to
us all but most importantly, how to cook it."

Prep School Headmaster, Chris Gatherer, said: "This facility is
already popular with the children who are thoroughly enjoying their
cooking whilst at the same time developing valuable
life-skills. It gives us a fantastic opportunity to add
further to the wide curriculum already on offer at the school."

As well as thanking the Tanner Brothers for their inspiration
and support throughout the project, the Prep School's Chairman of
Governors, David Woodgate, also thanked the Bailey Partnership for
their role in the initial planning and design, and the Plymouth
College maintenance team, who undertook the conversion of the
former Naval Hospital building.

Plymouth College Preparatory School has been celebrating all

The cast of 70 pupils from the junior department acted and sang
their way through an adventure involving Bjorn-The-Peaceful's quest
to become a 'new' Viking in the age of pillaging and
plundering.

The play, written by Headmaster, Chris Gatherer, involved
trolls, ancient bats and a very loud Viking rock band. As the
intrepid Viking warriors set off across the North Sea to raid
Britain they had to deal with all the perils the Norse Gods threw
at them, before taking on the tribe of Olaf the Valiant and
finishing the show with a selection of songs by Abba.

"We had a lot of fun putting on this show", said Chris.
"The costumes looked great and the children put on lively
performances, really getting into the spirit of the songs."

As part of their science topic work, Year One spent a lovely
sunny day visiting the Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Otter
Sanctuary. They began the visit with a classroom session in
which the children were able to show David, the 'butterfly man',
how much they knew about the lifecycle of butterflies (at school
the children had recently observed caterpillars growing, pupating
and finally being released as fully grown painted lady
butterflies).

In the giant greenhouse, everyone was delighted to see many
exotic butterflies and moths which normally live in much warmer
countries. Some of the most fascinating were the beautiful
giant Atlas moths and their 'tea bag' shaped cocoons.

Later in the morning everyone went outside to watch the
otters being fed. Tim the keeper told the children all about
their different characters and habits. After such a
fascinating and informative visit the children were ready for a
picnic lunch and a play in the sunshine.

Year 4 visited the National Marine Aquarium recently, where they
were met by Lauren from the Learning Team. She showed the
pupils food chains and different types of plankton - the class was
amazed to find out that jellyfish were plankton.

Next the children went to the Atlantic Reef, where they were
told to find a flatfish. The pupils found lots in the sand but they
were hard to see because of the sand patterns on their backs.

After this they went to see the 4D film about the ocean, which
told the children that people should not kill sharks or drop
litter. They saw sharks; there were three, two girls and a boy.

The class then saw an octopus called Inca and after that they
had lunch.

In the afternoon the pupils went back to the Atlantic Reef and
saw some divers come in to clean the tank and feed some of the sea
creatures. The students communicated with a diver using sign
language.

The children finished the day with a return visit to see Inca,
the octopus, to sketch her. Some found different creatures and made
observational drawings of them instead.

On an extremely cold and blustery day at the beginning of May,
Year 2 visited Plymouth Hoe.

The children had great fun climbing inside Smeaton's Tower,
exploring the Sensory Garden and looking at the various monuments
and statues.

On a clear day one can see for 24 miles from the top of the
lighthouse. Unfortunately Year 2 could only see as far as the
breakwater!

The children still enjoyed the visit and went back to school
with heads full of facts. Did you know there are 93 steps in the
tower…?

History topic, 'How we used to live.'

The visit to Saltram allowed the children to experience both
upstairs and downstairs life in a large country house. They visited
the kitchens, housekeepers' room and the school room and they also
went round the beautiful rooms in the main house.

They had the opportunity to dress in period costumes, look for
mice, and even sit in a sedan chair.

other with a second class stamp. The first class letters were
delivered to the classroom the very next day.

Steve Blake, from the Royal Mail Sorting Office, came in to talk
to the children about the history of the Royal Mail and how the
sorting office works today. He brought the official franking
stamp with him and everybody franked a self-addressed envelope with
a first class stamp. The children were very excited when
their letters reached their homes one day later.

The children and their teachers crossed the River Tamar on the
Cremyll ferry and began their walk around the country park, passing
slopes of golden daffodils that were glowing in the sunshine.

The children enjoyed a quick break for refreshments beside the
duck pond before continuing their nature walk around the
grounds. They ambled along the National Camelia Trail where
they saw some wonderful flowers in bloom. The ruined 'Folly'
was a firm favourite, giving great views of Plymouth and the
sea.

At lunchtime the children sat beside the beach to have their
picnic, before setting off once more to explore old buildings and
canons on route back to the ferry.

With one last stop for a welcome ice-cream, tired children and

mid-winter festival with a mixture of learning and fun
activities. As well as mask-making for a carnival-procession
finale, the children got to grips with the language through
learning a traditional song, playing games and taking part in a
quiz. Year 10 and Sixth Form IB students helped to run the
day, as well as Swiss Assistant, Ursina Sommer.

Head of German, Richard Robinson, said: "It was a really fun day
and a great way for the Year 6 pupils to be introduced to the
language. The teachers also got into the spirit of Karneval
by dressing up and there were lots of prizes for best efforts and
contributions to the celebration of this historical festival.
As is also a Karneval tradition, many sweets were showered on the
procession!"

maths teacher, John Wayne, just before half term. The joint
deputy head and director of studies had been at the school for 33
years.

His retirement was marked by an emotional special assembly in
the chapel, in which Year 6 children presented 'The twelve faces of
Wayne', a light-hearted sketch of all the roles John has held
during his time at the school. The Prep School deputy chair of
Governors, Mrs McKinnel, and teachers Mr Cottrell and Mrs Avery,
gave heart-felt tributes.

John was born in Somerset but moved to Plymouth when he was just
one year old. After ten years of working in engineering, John
retrained as a teacher and joined the Prep School in 1978. A
successful sportsman, he coached rugby, cricket and football and
ran the chess and stamp clubs. He was housemaster of Pusey
and organised the annual French trip.

"John is the essence of the perfect school master", said
Plymouth College Preparatory School Headmaster, Chris
Gatherer. "He heads into a happy retirement with the
enormous satisfaction that there are thousands of people in the
world whose lives have been enriched by his inspired guidance."

John, who lives in Roborough with his wife Lesley, is looking
forward to spending more time with his grandchildren and playing
golf. A staunch Arsenal supporter, he hopes he will now be
able to attend more matches!

There was great excitement at Plymouth College Preparatory
School when Commonwealth medallists, Tom Daley, Antony James and
Michaela Breeze, were special guests at Assembly.

Tom, who won two diving gold medals, Antony who swam his way to
silver and bronze medals and Michaela, who won a silver for
weightlifting, came to announce the winners of the 'Ben's Dream'
competition and to sign autographs.

Ben Clark is a former Plymouth College pupil who was part of the
school's elite swimming programme. Now aged 20, his 2012
Olympic dreams were cut short earlier this year when he broke his
neck in a freak accident. Although he has regained some
movement in his upper body, he remains paralysed from the waist
down. However, Ben is determined to compete for Britain in
the 2012 Paralympics. He has set up a charity called Chairs
for Champions and hopes to raise enough money to fund a special
racing wheelchair and other important equipment for him and other
disabled athletes.

Prep pupils, George and Jack Rudd, who met Ben recently,
organized a competition to raise money for his charity. With
Ben's Dream as the title, pupils had to paint, draw or colour a
picture for Ben. The winners were: Jack Rabin (Reception), Thomas
Lamerton (Year 1), Rebecca Eadie (Year 2), Sam Harvey and Sam
Malcolm (Year 3), Emily Smith (Year 4), Theo Roustand (Year 5) and
Romy Ramakers (Year 6).

The competition and autographs raised £120 for Chairs for
Champions.

Year 4 visited Cotehele House as part of their studies on Tudor
England. It was a beautiful, sunny day and the house and gardens
looked very inviting in the sunshine.

On arrival, the children were greeted by the two guides and
after a brief introduction were all given the opportunity to dress
in Tudor style costumes. Some were lavishly dressed as nobles and
some as the servants.

The children toured the house as 'Tudors', much to the delight
of fellow visitors, and were given a fascinating insight into how
life would have been at Cotehele, 500 years ago.

After lunch, which was enjoyed out in the sunshine, the pupils
walked down through the Tudor gardens, past the stew pond and
dovecot, to the river, where they enjoyed the legend of Richard
Edgcumbe's escape from Richard III, before the Battle of Bosworth
Field.

The children, aged 4 to 11 years old, sang a song for peace and
the readings covered most of the conflicts of the last
century. The two minutes silence ended with the presentation of the
wreaths at the foot of the Memorial Board to all the nurses
and doctors from the Plymouth Royal Naval Hospital who gave their
lives during the First World War (the school is based on the site
of the former Royal Naval Hospital).

This year the Last Post was played by a Year 6 pupil, Thomas
Douie, who rose to the occasion magnificently. It is normally
played by a Senior School pupil.

Headmaster Chris Gatherer said: "The service was a most moving
occasion and the children marked the occasion very
respectfully".

As part of their history studies about the Victorians, Year 5
paid a visit to Lanhydrock House in Cornwall. The children were
divided into three groups and got to dress up in a range of
Victorian costumes.

The first group learned about being a servant in Victorian times
and looked at the vast kitchens. The second group experienced
being a child in Victorian times by exploring the nursery and
playing with some of the toys. The third group found out all about
the family who lived at Lanhydrock, the Agar-Robarts. The
children were fascinated to hear about the lavish lives they
led.

popcorn!

As part of their science lesson, the children in Year 2 were
learning about the story of corn: from seed, to soil, to harvest,
to market. A highlight of the lesson was making and eating
popcorn.

The children were able to share their learning with the younger
pupils in the Kindergarten, who were busy building a 'cinema' so,
of course, popcorn was very welcome! The older pupils also read
Kindergarten a short story about corn.

Harvest Song sung by the infants. Two Year 6 groups performed
short sketches, creating new words out of the word Harvest to
convey the Harvest Festival message and the choir sang a special
Harvest samba. The children remembered those less fortunate than
themselves in their prayers at the end of the service.

On Wednesday 21st April we went to the Hoe. We were
going because we were learning about Grace Darling. When we got
there we were put in groups. I was with Lucy when we arrived.

When we fitted in the door we turned left and found ourselves
walking up a spiral staircase. When we finished the stairs, we
found ourselves in the storeroom. There were ladder-like steps.
They led up to the oil room. More ladder-like steps led up to the
kitchen, then the bedroom and the lantern room. We went outside and
we were 22 metres high. We saw Mount Edgcumbe and my house. We went
down all the steps, except the spirals, backwards.

After that we went to the Sensory Garden. After that we went to
the memorials where we saw some strange names. I loved the
trip.

on a tour of the upstairs of the house to see how the gentry lived.
All agreed that they would rather not be one of the

school now boasts specialist rooms for science, ICT, art, music and
design technology. It has spacious classrooms, a theatre,
purpose-built sports hall, large sports field, outdoor play areas
and a chapel.

Combining a healthy balance of high-quality academic study and a
broad range of fun activities, the co-ed school for children aged 2
½ to 11 years also offers a bus service and free aftercare -
nursery vouchers for three and four year olds can be used for
children attending the school's Kindergarten department.

Headmaster, Chris Gatherer, said: "We were delighted with the

The children at Plymouth College Preparatory School were
delighted to get a visit from diving star, Tom Daley, earlier this
week.

Tom, who attends Plymouth College's senior school, spoke at the
prep school assembly about how he got into diving, what he loves
about the sport and how scary it can be at the top of the 10m
board!

The excited children then got to ask him lots of questions about
his favourite dives, his training and what goes through his mind
when he dives.

"I really enjoyed the assembly", said Tom. "The children's
enthusiasm was great and they asked some really interesting
questions".

Science and art displays, cookery and sport demonstrations,
music and drama performances… these are just some of the activities
taking place at the Plymouth College Preparatory School Open
Morning.

The event for the co-ed day school for 2 ½ to 11 year olds is
taking place on Saturday 13th March 10 a.m. to 12
noon. Visitors will be able to go on a tour of the school and
meet the teachers and pupils.

Headmaster, Chris Gatherer, said: "Our aim is to provide a safe
and happy environment in which our pupils can grow in confidence
and reach their full potential whatever their strengths. This
is crucial in helping them to prepare for the next steps of their
education and beyond.

"We hope that our Open Morning will give parents, grandparents
and children a glimpse of what life is really like at the Prep
School and that they will see first-hand why are pupils have a lot
to smile about."

Mask-making, quizzes and singing were just some of the fun
activities undertaken by Year 6 when the Plymouth College German
department hosted a Karneval day at Plymouth College Preparatory
School.

Dressed in carnival costumes, the children celebrated the German
festival with a mixture of learning and fun activities. As
well as mask-making for a carnival-procession finale, the children
got to grips with the language through learning traditional songs
and taking part in a quiz.

Head of German, Richard Robinson, said: "It was a really fun day
and a great way for the Year 6 pupils to be introduced to Germany
and its language. The teachers also got into the spirit of
Karneval by dressing up and there were lots of prizes for best
efforts and contributions to the celebration of this historical
mid-winter festival. As is also a Karneval tradition, many
sweets were showered on the procession!"

Plymouth College Preparatory School pupils have raised £992.57
for Marie Curie by growing pots of mini daffodils.

Part of the Marie Curie 'Mini Pots of Care' initiative, the
children planted their bulbs back in November and got sponsorship
from friends and family for growing the daffodils.

After decorating their pots and having lessons on daffodils
and the work of Marie Curie, the pupils celebrated their blooms
with a 'Wear something yellow' day and put their pots of daffodils
on display in the school chapel.

"It was fantastic to see the chapel filled with so many pots and
flowers", said Headmaster, Chris Gatherer. "The children have
been able to learn a lot from looking after and growing the
daffodils while raising money for a very good cause at the same
time. I am very proud of them"

Even though pupils at Plymouth College Preparatory School met
the dalek's demands to donate money to the Haiti appeal,
Headmaster, Chris Gatherer, still ended up being
'exterminated'!

The surprise visit by Dr Who's arch enemy was the Prep School's
third activity to raise money for the Haiti appeal, which now
stands at just over £850 - the children have previously held a toy
sale, raffle and name the teddy competition.

Mr Gatherer is obviously a very popular Headmaster as nearly
£550 was raised to save him from a fate worse than death (although
the children did have the incentive of having their photos taken
with the dalek as well). However the dalek, aka Rev Karl
Freeman of St Emmanuel Church, showed no mercy and decided to
'exterminate' Mr Gatherer anyway much to the delight of the
children.

"I think this was definitely one of the highlights of the term
so far", said Headmaster, Chris Gatherer. "Being
'exterminated' was a first for me but on a more serious note, I am
really proud of the children for all their efforts in raising so
much money for the Haiti appeal."

Featuring check-in, customs and passport control, the children
boarded the 'plane' and went through a full safety announcement
courtesy of the 'teacher' air stewardesses. Wearing holiday
clothes, the children made their own passports and brought their
luggage into school.

Molly was the first pilot of the day, securing a smooth landing
in Paris. Over the course of the day further flights were
taken to Africa and Australia - each scheduled stop involved a
lesson based on the country they were 'visiting' before returning
to the airport for their next adventure.

"It was a really fun way for the children to learn about
different countries and cultures", said Head of Infants, Sally
Raymond-Jones. "It was very exciting to go through the
airport procedures, particularly for those who haven't flown
before."

School's Remembrance Day service.

Simon Hickman was a Major in the Royal Marines when he died of a
brain tumour on Remembrance Day five years ago. The wreath
was also dedicated to three of Major Hickman's military friends:
Major Jason Ward (died in a helicopter crash in Iraq), Marine Jamie
Hutton (died in a military driving accident) and Major Stephen
Ballard (died of natural causes in Iraq).

The service, held in the school's chapel, was a mix of hymns,
prayers and readings. Hamish Rose, Philip Habib and Charlie
Haynes took it in turns to read extracts from Hentry V while Lauren
Reed and Freya Lam presented Wilfred Owen's poem 'Futility'.
A further wreath was laid by two Year 6 pupils, who were supported
by members of the Plymouth College Combined Cadet Force and
accompanied by bugler, Sophie Brown, playing The Last Post.

"The chapel originally served the Royal Navy when this site was
a military hospital and it contains a number of memorials to those
who have lost their lives in times of war", said Headmaster, Chris
Gatherer. "However, our Remembrance Day service is not just
about conflicts that happened many years ago but it is also about
remembering service personnel, particularly family members of
pupils, who are currently serving at home and overseas."

“We will also be putting a horseshoe up in the school. One of the many stories about St Dunstan is that he nailed a horseshoe to the Devil's hoof when he was asked to re-shoe the Devil's horse. This caused the Devil great pain, and St Dunstan only agreed to remove the shoe and release the Devil after he promised never to enter a place where a horseshoe is over the door. This is claimed as the origin of the lucky horseshoe.”

The troops were on Operations over the Christmas period and did not receive any mail until the end of December when they returned to Khandahar to be greeted by a huge backlog of Christmas mail.

During the course of their belated Christmas party, they took time out to capture the moment of opening the many gifts sent by the pupils and, as you can see from the picture, they were delighted with the contents and the Christmas cards from the children.

The teacher who organised the appeal, Frances Baylis, whose son is part of ‘K’ Company, said: “On behalf of my son and his compatriots a very grateful thank you to all the children and their parents for their generosity and kind actions”.

Involving nearly 60 pupils from Years 5 and 6, the play was written by Headmaster, Chris Gatherer, and involved lots of singing and dancing.

Based on the Famous Five stories and characters, and set during the Kingsbridge Festival, the story follows a series of adventures involving a hippy Mayor of Kingsbridge, cops and robbers, witches, musical characters and the Statue of Liberty to name but a few.

Plymouth College Junior School Headmaster, Chris Gatherer, said: “Mr Perchais has been an inspiration to thousands of pupils over the past 34 years. As well as being a housemaster at the school, he led the annual Year 6 trip to Normandy. His caring nature, and tremendous sense of humour, made him a very popular member of staff. The thoughts of everybody connected with the school are with his immediate family and particularly his partner Jenny.”

Boxes of food and treats will be winging their way to 40 Commando in Afghanistan this Christmas, courtesy of pupils at Plymouth College Junior School. The children aged 3 to 11 have been bringing in items that, although relatively basic, are unattainable in Afghanistan. Donations range from dried fruit and sweets to tissues and playing cards, and will be used to fill as many gift boxes for as many people as possible.

Tesco at Lee Mill has also made a significant contribution with a shopping spree of £100, which saw mince pies, crisps, biscuits, ketchup, marmite, tea bags and many other favourites loaded into a trolley.

The Christmas boxes were the idea of parent, Rachael Hudson, after watching the recent TV series 'Commando' and remembering her own time away from home in the forces.

"The Adjutant of 40 Commando assured me that these gifts would be greatly appreciated by his troops and would really boost their morale at such a difficult time to be away from home", said Rachael.

"The response from the children has been overwhelming with some bringing in specially-decorated boxes brimming with gifts and others giving very generous cash donations. Many have also made Christmas cards to be sent with the boxes. I would also like to say a big thank you to Tina Mitchelmore, Tesco Customer Service Manager, who organised the shopping trip at the Lee Mill store."

Plymouth College Junior School pupil, Eleanor Newcombe aged 9, has raised £112.32 for Families for Children. A Christian charity, the voluntary adoption agency places children from all over the UK with stable loving families in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset.

Eleanor decided to organise a raffle because her parents have been supporters of the charity for some time. With the help of her friends Melodie Cherrington and Molly McHugh, she sold tickets in the playground at break times, lunch times and after school. Raffle prizes included three teddy bears, two puppies in pockets, a pencil case and contents, a 'Pirates of the Caribbean' ship and a remote controlled car.

Ally Cotton, Fundraising and Publicity Co-ordinator for Families for Children came along to the draw held during school assembly and presented Eleanor and her friends with certificates in recognition of their hard work.
