Plymouth College V Kelly College - 13/11/09
Published: 19 November, 2009
On a very cold, wet Saturday afternoon, six teams represented
Plymouth College against local rivals Kelly College, with all six
teams coming out on top.
The First team put in a very good performance and deservedly came
out as winners, the score being 20-0, with tries coming from Olly
Eccles and Charlie Maidment, who grabbed his second try in two
matches. Two Henry Slade conversions and two further penalties from
Slade concluded the scoring. The first team have now only lost two
fixtures all season and are through to the next rounds of the Daily
Mail and Devon Cup.
The Second Team continued in their winning ways, easily beating
their opposition 22-0. Plymouth dominated large periods of the
game, attacking well, and defending strongly where it was needed. A
great chip and chase try from Joe Marshall was undoubtedly the pick
of the tries, and others were scored by Tom Oates and Jon Hall, who
scored two. One Joe Marshall conversion added to his points tally
for the day. The seconds have still only lost one match this season
and boast one of the best records in the school.
The Under 15s (above, right) have still not lost a Saturday
fixture this season. This came after another fine performance
against a poor Kelly side. The game had to be stopped 15 minutes
early after Plymouth again passed the 50 point barrier, with Kelly
failing to put any points on the board. The final score was an
impressive 52-0, with tries coming from Callum Cload, George
Haslam, two from Ollie Clenaghan, two from Jamie Wace, Sean
Lochhead and Joe Martin. Captain Tom Mumford managed to convert six
of these tries.
The Under 14s also had a very good win. They put in a very
dogged performance in the pouring rain, with everyone working
extremely hard to fight for a well-earned victory.
The Under 13s also had a fine victory, winning 15-7. They were
really up for this game against our local rivals and the boys
stepped up to the challenge. They all showed the required character
and fight for a match of this magnitude. Dom Mulberry produced some
ferocious tackling, leaving the opposition number ten scared to get
the ball. Aaron Richards, who might not have the size, but
definitely the heart of a lion, ran direct and attacking lines at
the opposition's back line. The forwards rucked mercilessly and did
not give Kelly's forwards a sniff of the ball in the contact zones.
The mobility of Ben Pearson and Jeremy Eason was a key factor all
afternoon. It was good to welcome back Dan Cummings after a month
lay-off through injury. The only disappointment is that despite
having Kelly on the ropes for long periods, they failed to be
clinical enough to convert all our chances.
The U12s (below) concluded a brilliant day for Plymouth College
with a great victory over their Kelly counterparts, winning a very
tight fixture.
