Plymouth College Modern Pentathlon scholar, Georgina Barrington,
17, has won the U17 and U20 Scottish Fencing Championships.
Held in Dunfermline, the one-day event saw Georgina progress
through the rounds of both age group competitions in a series of
first-to-15-points fights. The Scottish-born athlete competed
against the best fencers in Scotland to take the two titles.
"It was a great feeling to win both the championship titles",
said Georgina. "I was particularly pleased to win the U20
category as I'm only 17".
Georgina moved to Devon when she was young and until recently
has competed for England. However, fencing in Scotland is
developing fast and Georgina is keen to be part of the
up-and-coming team.
"About six months ago I decided that I would like to represent
the country of my birth", explains Georgina. "There are a lot
of exciting opportunities in the sport in Scotland and I really
want to be involved. My aim is to get selected for Scotland
for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The event is going to be
held in Glasgow and fencing is going to be in the main competition
for the first time in years."
No stranger to representing her country, Georgina was selected
to the senior Great Britain team for the World Cup Tournament in
Spain followed by selection to the U17 Great Britain team for the
European Fencing Championships in Athens earlier this year.
She is currently 8th in the senior UK rankings.
