English
The College's English teaching is in line with National
Curriculum requirements, using textbooks geared to National
Curriculum objectives and the Framework for the Teaching of
English. There is a wide range of novels, short stories and
plays for classes in Years 7 - 9.
Oral work is a vital part of English teaching: as well as
regular work in the classroom we hold an annual Spoken English
Competition open to the whole school and a Poetry Speaking
Competition for Years 7 and 8. In addition, we hold a
Creative Writing Competition that reaches a climax in the summer
term - this is also open to everyone. Outside adjudicators -
normally published writers - judge these competitions.
All Year 11 students take English Language (except for some EAL
students) and most take English Literature GCSE, combining exams,
course work and oral assessments. Current Year 10 students are
embarking on IGCSE courses. In the Sixth Form we teach A Level
English Literature; students in the Lower Sixth take their AS
course, completing two modules (one exam and one coursework
component) by the end of their Lower Sixth year. Most will
continue with two further modules in the Upper Sixth to complete
their A level course.
We aim to encourage our students' understanding and enjoyment of
English language and literature, and there are regular theatre
visits. The department works closely with the School
Librarian.
Extra tuition is provided for pupils with learning difficulties
and excellent help is provided by the Learning Support
Department.
