English as an Additional Language (EAL)

We have a small number of students for whom English is an additional language. These students receive lessons in EAL (English as an Additional Language) from a team of supportive and friendly specialist teachers with the aim of developing the four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. An adaptable and flexible approach to teaching offers support to meet the changing needs of individual pupils and the children are encouraged to fully integrate into school life.

Academic progress in EAL is monitored on a regular basis and in Year 11, students are prepared for the General IELTS exam in preparation for the Sixth Form. Entry into the Lower Sixth is subject to a minimum IELTS grade of 5.5. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is jointly managed by the University of Cambridge, the British Council and IDP Education Australia. This qualification confirms to the highest international standards of language assessment and the Academic IELTS level is essential for university entrance in many countries, including the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. EAL lessons are consequently very important in the Sixth Form and a minimum of six periods a week are dedicated to preparing students for this essential exam which is generally taken towards the end of the Upper Sixth.
