School Library

"The aim of the War Memorial Committee is to establish a collection of books worthy of the School, in a room worthy to commemorate those who served in the war."
(The Plymothian, July 1948)

Honouring these original intentions, the library looks to the future in terms of supporting the curriculum and all areas of school life.

Situated on the first floor of the Main Building, it is a light, spacious area where pupils have intranet and internet access, as well as a wide range of books, newspapers, periodicals and other reference facilities. Colour printing and photocopying are available and there is a small, but well-used, stationery shop.

The library is open before school, during break and lunchtime and until 5.00p.m. During lesson time it is used by classes or groups researching specific areas; for Sixth Form private study and as a place where pupils who need extra time to support core subjects can work. During Prep time it is available to Year 11 as a place to work and to all other years for research.

The atmosphere is normally a quiet hum of work, research or reading.

During the course of the year, evening events such as the finals of the Poetry Speaking, Spoken English and Creative Writing competitions are held in the library. Other library-based activities include 'Shadowing the Carnegie' and Book Clubs and Fairs.
