Plymouth College and Plymouth Leander Swimming Scholarship Scheme
Swimming Scholarship Programme for Aspiring National and International Age and Youth Swimmers
Secondary School Education and Swimming Scholarships with One of Britain's Top Programmes
As one of the UK's leading swimming programmes, athletes aged 10-18 years wishing to develop their swimming with Plymouth Leander are able to do so whilst benefiting from a first class primary and/or secondary school education with Plymouth College (11-18 years). The combined programme offers many unique benefits which allow young athletes to flourish both in the pool and in the classroom without one compromising the other.
The Plymouth College/Plymouth Leander partnership commenced in September 2001 to coincide with the opening of the College's pool. Since this time, the scholarship scheme has welcomed many day and boarding students who have developed into National champions and medallists and ensured regular selections for both England and Great Britain swim teams.
Swimming Programme Facilities...
- 25m pool (starting blocks and anti-wave lane lines) built September 2001
- Fully equipped weights and fitness suite
- Wooden floor gymnasium for swiss ball, medicine ball, pilates and circuit work
- Full size Sports Hall
- Sports Conference Room above the pool, used for athlete briefings, target setting sessions, parent meetings and a homework facility for day student swimming scholars
- The City of Plymouth has firm plans to build a 10-lane 50m pool with a separate 6-lane 25m swim down pool in Central Park by the end of 2010. The College's grounds back on to the Park.
Programme Focus & Direction...
- This is a British Swimming Funded Programme, a Swim 21 Performance Programme and in receipt of the Sport England 'Club Mark'. We are one of the few British swimming programme registered with the National Association for Gifted Children
- This programme offers their Performance athletes over 25 hours of pool time per week in a purpose built 25m pool, structured in such a way that it does not impact on academic achievement
Boarding at the College...
- Swimming scholars board in a specialist facility designed purely for the needs of the elite athlete. 'Captain's House' is set in beautiful and secure grounds and managed by specialist boarding staff who come from an elite swimming background. We believe that this is the only such facility of this kind in the UK
- There is regular communication between boarding staff, parents, coaches and the boarding athletes themselves
- Swimming scholars are encouraged to return home at weekends & in school holidays for their own well-being and to maintain a link with their original home programme. This is at each athlete's discretion and athletes are still able to stay at the College over a weekend should they so desire
The Coaches...
- How many swimming programmes offer you the chance to work with two National Head Coaches both with an International pedigree?
- How many programmes can guarantee that another International standard Coach is always there to work with the athletes when the other is away on International duty?
- How many programmes can offer both a leading male and female coach to work with athletes in both training and competition?
- How many programmes can offer you an exemplary swim specific land training programme, directed by two experts who come from a unique professional background combination of both physical education and physiotherapy?
