Modern Pentathlon and Fencing Academy
Young athletes wishing to develop their skills in the modern
pentathlon arena while receiving a first-class education are able
do so at Plymouth College. The combined programme offers many
unique benefits which allow pupils to flourish on the sports field
and in the classroom without one compromising the other. Designed
to help young people achieve their sporting dreams and fulfil their
academic potential, scholarships are available in either Modern
Pentathlon or Fencing.
In conjunction with Plymouth Fencing Club, fencers have won 48
British Championships, reached 2 World finals and also won numerous
Commonwealth senior and junior medals. Head Coach, Andy Hill, has
coached fencers who have won every British Epee Championship for
males and females from the under 14 age group right up to senior
level.
The swimming programme, in partnership with Plymouth Leander, is
truly world-class. Over the last three years, Plymouth
College swimmers have won World and European medals, competed in
World Championship finals and have broken more than 30 British and
English swimming records. More than 20 swimmers have had
International experience and National records are held in five
different countries around the world.
The Plymouth College Modern Pentathlon and Fencing Academy also
offers Shooting and Running, both with individual tailor-made
coaching programmes. The College has a dedicated on-site
shooting range with full facilities giving students ample
opportunity to improve their skills, and running club, The Pumas,
meet regularly for training on and off-site. In addition, the
show-jumping team practises at established stables within easy
reach of the College.
Many athletes choose to take advantage of the College's weekly
and full boarding facilities. Offering a home-from-home, the
friendly family-run houses have bedrooms sleeping between one and
four boarders, a range of TV and common rooms, and computer rooms
with internet access. All meals are served in the near-by
dining room and the boarding team organise a wide-range of
activities to take full advantage of being a city-based school with
the coastal and moorland landscapes of Devon and Cornwall close to
hand.
Director of Pentathlon and Fencing, Andy Hill, offers expert
mentoring to students and is supported by a team of international
coaches and athletes. In addition, each pupil is assigned a tutor
who is responsible for academic progress and personal
development. Sports, academic and pastoral staff maintain a
close link at all times to ensure each young athlete's welfare is
maintained.
