Design and Technology
Exam Board: Edexcel
Head of Department: Mr J W Hocking
- Product Design
- Resistant Materials Technology
- Graphics with Materials Technology
- Textiles Technology
Am I suited to this course?
It would be helpful if you have studied Design Technology and have achieved success at GSCE level. Other subjects which go well with Design Technology are Art & Design, Physics, Mathematics, Business Studies and ICT.
With a qualification in Design Technology you could go on to higher education and work in design and manufacturing or related careers.
Students should have a strong interest in designing, modelling, making and evaluating products.
What will I study?
You will study a range of industrial and commercial practices including manufacturing processes, materials, ergonomics and control systems. A lot of this is achieved through hands-on design and make project-work, but obviously there is a need for formal theory and homeworks. Project-work will be specific to your chosen area of study.
How is the AS and A2 level assessed?
AS
- Unit 1 Product Development 1 - coursework based on your chosen study area.
- Unit 2 Knowledge and Understanding of Product Design - a 2 hour exam
A2
- Unit 3 Further study of Produce Design - a 2 hour examination.
- Unit 4 Commercial Product Development - a further design and piece of coursework.
NB Written papers are specific to your chosen study area.
