Am I suited to this course?
The course is available to pupils of any religious faith or none: one does not have to be religious to succeed in Religious Studies. Pupils must, however, be aware that the topics studied on the course will be of a very academic nature and will require considerable in-depth learning. Religious Studies can complement a wide range of subjects including the sciences.
What will be studied at AS level?
There will be 2 units. In the Philosophy unit, pupils study major influences on the philosophy of religion. Here there is a need to have a basic knowledge of the thinking of Plato and Aristotle. Further study in this unit involves a consideration of the Ontological, Cosmological, Teleological and Moral arguments for the existence of God.
In the Religious Ethics unit, pupils will be required to demonstrate knowledge and show an understanding of ethical theories and the ways in which ethical systems like Utilitarianism may be applied to major social issues such as abortion and euthanasia.
What will be studied at A2 level?
There will be 2 units. In the Philosophy unit, pupils will need to be able to demonstrate knowledge and show an understanding of Religious Language and Religious Experience. Further attention will be given to the concept of Miracle and the distinctions between Body and Soul as expressed in the thinking of Plato, Aristotle, Hick and Dawkins.
With the Religious Ethics unit, pupils study ethical topics and theories such as Freewill and Determinism. Other areas of study focus on practical ethics where pupils are expected to demonstrate a knowledge and show an understanding of ethical theories such as Natural Law as applied to Environmental and Business Ethics.
How will I be internally assessed?
Assessment grades during the year will be based heavily on the essays that have been given for homework. One essay will be given every two weeks which will be set on the work covered in the lessons.
