Plymouth College pupils, Abagael Black and Ben Andrews, achieved brilliant results at The Cadet and Junior Commonwealth Fencing Championships.

Abagael Black was first to compete in the Cadets U17 Women’s epee competition, and a clear round of 5 victories in the first round of poule matches positioned her in second place in the elimination rounds. Abagael fought tough opposition and remained in the lead for most of the early stages, finishing in a fantastic 10th place. The Women’s Cadet team event saw Abagael once again in action with England, resulting in silver medals for the England Cadet women.

Ben Andrews, in his final year as a cadet fencer, had a mixed first round poule but finished with 3 victories and 2 defeats which placed him 15th in the elimination stages. After an impressive performance, Ben claimed the silver medal. Ben’s next event was the Cadet team competition. The England team, with some fantastic fencing, came in second place which resulted in a second silver medal for Ben.

The championships, held at the University of Northumbria in July, saw a total of 19 Commonwealth countries competing across all three weapons.
