Health and well-being have been on the agenda for Plymouth College athletes in a series of workshops led by Olympic silver medallist and World Champion rower, Miriam Luke.

Run by the Youth Sport Trust, the Junior Athlete Education (JAE) programme is for young athletes aged 14-19 who are competing at county/national/international level and have demanding time commitments. The JAE workshops are designed to help young athletes to balance their academic and sporting commitments, and plan how to maximise their potential.

Drawing on her own experiences in performance sport, Miriam has mentored the Plymouth College athletes over the last 12 months.   Topics covered in her workshops have included time management, planning, goal-setting, communication, Team You and performance improvement.  She has also held a workshop for parents.

“Having Miriam Luke as a mentor for our young athletes has been a great addition to our support network,” said Plymouth College’s Well-Being and Lifestyle Mentor, Charlie Smith.

“The athletes said that they found all the workshops really useful, particularly the one on time management which helped them to visualise their weekly routine and work out a school, swimming and social life balance. Team You was also useful as it allowed them to identify who is around them to support them in their journeys and careers as performance athletes.”
