At Plymouth College we offer an exceptional range of enrichment activities which vary from term to term. Clubs and activities run during lunchtimes and after school and residential trips take place to further add to the extra-curricular activities. All pupils are encouraged to participate in order to aid their personal development; this could be discovering new skills or developing existing talents. Class teachers or form tutors monitor pupils’ involvement and help guide their choices.
Co-Curricular
Music
At Plymouth College Prep School, we encourage all pupils to embrace music-making.
In the Early Years and the infant department, children discover music through movement, singing and percussion. They learn the recorder in Year 2, performing regularly throughout the year.
Years 3 and 4 continue with the recorder and introduce the violin during class music, with a strong emphasis on singing and stage performances.
In Years 5 and 6, pupils use keyboards to play and compose, often forming their own groups and bands, with several concerts held annually.
We also offer expert tuition, instrumentalists can join the recorder ensemble or school bands and singers can participate in the school or chamber choir, reflecting our vibrant musical environment.
Drama
A key objective at our school is to cultivate confident and articulate speakers as pupils progress. Drama is instrumental in achieving this; from their earliest days in Early Years, children are consistently given opportunities to explore acting and enhance their public speaking abilities. All pupils participate with enthusiasm in school productions, regularly staged throughout the year in our MK-Hall which is equipped with the latest professional equipment, providing invaluable performance experience.
In Years 5 and 6, dedicated drama lessons introduce a diverse range of skills, from lively improvisation to expressive mime. Pupils thoroughly enjoy not only performing but also writing, producing and directing their own original plays, alongside tackling extracts from Shakespeare and other renowned playwrights. We also offer peripatetic training for LAMDA examinations and our public speaking competitions further ensure all pupils gain vital confidence for their future endeavours.
Academic Enrichment
Plymouth College is passionate about nurturing academia – in whatever form that may be.
Alongside a broad curriculum, we have a comprehensive academic enrichment programme designed to place our pupils in the best position possible for a variety of pathways after their time with us – be it in the world of work, or academia. The general aim of the programme is to build a more enriched and educated pupil body while at the same time providing these opportunities in an individualised way.
These activities include:
- Whole School Magazine club
- STEM club
- Challenge club
- Business and Enterprise club
- Book club
Sport
Sport is a cornerstone of our co-curricular offering, designed to cultivate both a lifelong love for physical activity and opportunities for competitive success. Pupils engage in a diverse range of team sports including hockey, rugby, netball and cricket, with structured development from an early age.
They benefit from expert coaching and excellent on-site facilities like our astroturf, dedicated netball court and 25m swimming pool. Regular fixtures, regional tournaments and internal house competitions provide exciting platforms for all. Beyond traditional team games, pupils also excel in athletics, swimming and cross-country, with pathways for talented individuals to represent the school and beyond.
We encourage participation at all levels, fostering teamwork, resilience and a healthy, active lifestyle for every child, empowering them to discover and develop their sporting talents.
Art and Design
Our pupils are exceptionally fortunate to receive inspiring lessons in Art, Design Technology and Food Technology as integral parts of their curriculum, all delivered within our superb, custom-designed classroom spaces that encourage creativity and practical skill development.
For those pupils eager to explore and further hone their artistic talents, we offer a vibrant array of after-school clubs. These include the intricate Origami club, where precision and artistry combine; our popular Food Technology club, which often features seasonal highlights like the much-loved Christmas Cake club, blending culinary skills with festive fun; and numerous other creative arts clubs tailored to different interests and techniques.
This diverse provision ensures that budding talents in art and design are consistently nurtured and given ample opportunity to flourish across all age groups, allowing every child to express their unique creativity and develop valuable practical abilities.
Forrest School & Outdoor Education
Forrest School and Outdoor Education at Plymouth College is fundamentally about embracing adventure: getting out into nature and getting thoroughly stuck in, being courageous at trying new experiences and having immense fun in the process. Regardless of age or ability, it offers something rewarding for everyone, taking pupils to breathtaking places that are right on our doorstep and allowing them to experience things they never imagined possible.
Blessed by Plymouth’s superb South West location, the wild moors and expansive sea provide unrivalled settings for exploration. From our youngest pupils engaging weekly in our dedicated outdoor classroom, to Year 2s experiencing the rugged charm of Whiteworks our very own outwards bound centre located in the heart of Dartmoor National Park. Culminating in the Year 6 residential trip which varies in location across the UK, we ensure our pupils develop vital life skills such as resilience, teamwork and environmental appreciation, all while having an absolutely fantastic and memorable time.
