Co-Curricular

Beyond academics, our Sixth Form co-curricular programme is vital for personal growth, skill development and making lasting memories. We offer diverse opportunities for pupils to pursue passions, enhance wellbeing, build a strong community and prepare for life after Plymouth College.

Vibrant Social Scene

Our Sixth Form experience places a huge emphasis on creating lasting memories and a cohesive community through a varied social calendar, thoughtfully organised by the dedicated Sixth Form Social Committee.

Events are diverse and exciting, including a welcome boat cruise, the glamour of the Autumn and Winter Balls, relaxed pizza and film nights, stimulating Quiz Nights, fun-filled Casino Nights, the prestigious Summer Ball and lively Ceilidhs.

This vibrant mix of fun, teamwork and shared experiences is crucial. It fosters a genuinely friendly community of young adults, helping them develop essential hard and soft skills, ensuring they are well prepared and confident individuals ready to thrive after leaving Plymouth College.

Sport For All

At Plymouth College, we champion all aspects of sport, from grassroots engagement and team participation right through to supporting Olympic hopefuls. Our Sixth Formers benefit from a wealth of sporting opportunities and can make full use of excellent on site facilities, including a modern sports hall, a well equipped gym and a swimming pool. Team sports are particularly popular, with senior teams enjoying a regular calendar of fixtures.

Wednesday afternoons offer a diverse range of options, allowing pupils to pursue existing interests or try something new. Choices, which may vary by term, typically include badminton, rugby, outdoor adventure, football, golf, table tennis, cricket, rounders, netball, swimming, cardio vascular fitness/weight training, hockey, tennis and yoga, promoting both physical wellbeing and enjoyment.

High Performance Football Programme

Launching in September 2025, Plymouth College is thrilled to offer a High Performance Football Programme in partnership with Plymouth Argyle Football Club. This exciting collaboration provides talented young athletes a unique opportunity to pursue a first class education while simultaneously advancing their footballing careers.

Participants will receive the highest level coaching from UEFA licensed coaches at PAFC’s brand new, state-of-the-art academy training facility at Foulston Park. Alongside intensive football development, pupils benefit from Plymouth College’s outstanding academic provision and renowned pastoral care. This ensures a well rounded and balanced education, fostering success both on the pitch and in their academic studies, preparing them holistically for their futures.

Cricket & Hockey

Cricket is a summer staple for all pupils, with a winter programme also available for those with serious representative aspirations. The season features a regular and competitive fixture list, highlighted by the T-20 game against the MCC at Ford Park. We are proud of our alumni successes, including Jake Libby (Worcestershire CCC) and numerous Devon CCC players.

Hockey is played competitively in the autumn term, with a varied fixture list against local independent schools, maintained sector schools and clubs. Pupils are encouraged to train weekly, supplementing timetabled lessons, with ample competitive opportunities at weekends and mid-week. A notable recent success includes our U14s winning a Tier 2 National Title.

Competitive Field Sports

Rugby is a key competitive sport, played as 15-a-side in the autumn term and 7-a-side in spring, featuring a diverse fixture list against local schools and clubs. Weekly after school training complements timetabled lessons, offering extensive competitive play for all keen players, following in the footsteps of alumni such as England’s Henry Slade.

Netball is played with similar enthusiasm during the spring term, also boasting a varied fixture list. Pupils benefit from weekly training sessions in addition to their timetabled lessons, ensuring ample opportunities for competitive matches.

A recent mini-tour to Bath has been a particular highlight, enhancing team spirit for our players. Additional competitive opportunities in other sports are also available.

As part of our competitive sports programme, pupils receive strength and conditioning training lead by our head of S&C. This programme is designed to enhance performance and support the overall development of every pupil.

Dart River Challenge

Lower Sixth pupils participate in the demanding River Dart Source to Sea 12-hour challenge. This event involves walking, biking and canoeing the entire length of the spectacular River Dart within a single day. Starting with an alpine ascent, pupils walk to the river’s source high on Dartmoor. They then follow its picturesque course across the moor before collecting bikes to descend to Totnes. The final leg sees them canoeing from Totnes to the sea at Dartmouth.

This is a charitable sportive, requiring pupils to fundraise for the school’s designated charities as part of their entry, adding a valuable philanthropic dimension to this significant physical and mental endeavour.
