Our Sixth Form offers extensive opportunities for leadership, responsibility and personal growth beyond the curriculum. Pupils develop vital skills by contributing to our school community in diverse and meaningful ways.
Prefects & Additional Opportunities
Formal Leadership Roles
Sixth Formers embrace significant leadership positions, shaping our school environment. House Captains foster community within their houses, leading assemblies and organising events. Senior Prefects act as school ambassadors, welcoming guests, supporting events and guiding younger pupils.
The Sixth Form Committee takes initiative in overseeing charity events, managing the Sports Spirit Instagram page, organising socials, promoting academic culture and mentoring Prep School Prefects. Additionally, roles like Sports Captains and the Executive Prefect team, who lead the Academic Mentoring Programme, offer further avenues to develop crucial leadership and organisational skills, all while serving as inspiring role models for their peers and younger pupils.
Peer Support Systems
A strong culture of peer support thrives in our Sixth Form. Pupils undertake crucial duty support roles, working alongside staff to supervise and assist younger pupils during break and lunchtimes, ensuring a safe and caring environment. Many sixth formers also dedicate their time to assisting in sports coaching for younger teams, providing guidance, encouragement and helping to foster athletic development and team spirit.
Comprehensive mentoring and academic support are offered, with sixth formers sharing study tips with GCSE pupils based on their own experiences and providing subject-specific help to younger Senior School pupils, thereby building confidence and reinforcing learning throughout our community.
Wider Community Involvement
We encourage our sixth formers to actively engage with and contribute to the wider school community, fostering a culture of involvement and making a real difference. This commitment is demonstrated by the large proportion of our pupils volunteering their time in various capacities.
Opportunities are extensive and impactful, including assisting Year 1-2 Prep School pupils as readers, acting as Year 5 & 6 academic mentors within lessons, helping coach Prep School sports teams and supporting Prep School PSHEE sessions and assemblies. Sixth formers also run after-school activities for younger pupils, such as Chess and Knitting Clubs and serve as trained peer listeners, providing invaluable support.
Developing Independent Learners
A cornerstone of Sixth Form success is the ability to study and work independently, a vital skill for higher education and future careers. We provide a comprehensive study skills programme, featuring fortnightly tutor time sessions on various effective learning techniques. To support this, Sixth Formers maintain weekly ‘tracker’ documents logging their independent study activities, guided by subject-specific resource packs.
These trackers are then discussed in half-termly one-to-one meetings with tutors. These crucial conversations review the amount and type of independent study undertaken, offer a chance to discuss academic progress, address any successes or challenges and explore post-school aspirations, thereby cultivating effective, self-reliant learners.
