Sixth Form Curriculum

Our Sixth Form curriculum offers diverse academic pathways, primarily through A-Levels, tailored to foster intellectual growth and prepare pupils for higher education and future success in their chosen careers.

A-Level Pathway Choices

The cornerstone of our Sixth Form is the A-Level programme, where pupils typically study three subjects, with the possibility of four subjects with approval from the Deputy Head (Academic). Pupils are given considerable freedom in their subject preferences from our wide range of offerings. These choices then inform the construction of timetable blocks, ensuring a balanced academic schedule.

Each A-Level subject accounts for approximately a quarter of a pupil’s weekly timetable. The remaining time is strategically allocated to completing an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), engaging in other academic enrichment activities, undertaking supervised private study and dedicated wellbeing sessions. This structure, combined with small class sizes, ensures personalised attention and fosters an environment ripe for lively debate and collaborative work.

Enrichment & Independence

We actively cultivate a genuine spirit of intellectual enquiry within our Sixth Formers, encouraging them to explore beyond the standard A-Level syllabus. Our aim is to develop pupils who approach their studies with independence, tenacity and creative flair – skills crucial for university and modern careers. The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a significant component, allowing pupils to undertake a self-directed research project, thereby honing their research and critical thinking abilities. This emphasis on independent thought and rigorous academic enrichment ensures our pupils are well-prepared for their A-Level examinations and equipped with competencies for their future journeys.

After finishing my A Levels, I am now studying Medicine at St George's, University of London. What I remember most from my time at Plymouth College is being empowered to direct my own learning which has been an invaluable skill in my medical degree.

Vocational Sport Pathway

Alongside A-Levels, we offer the Sport Baccalaureate, a comprehensive and dynamic alternative curriculum route for pupils passionate about sport and outdoor education. This wide-ranging course is primarily accredited by BTEC and provides a strong vocational foundation.

Throughout the programme, pupils will also gain valuable additional qualifications, such as the First Aid at Work certificate, enhancing their practical skills. A key feature is its assessment methodology; pupils are evaluated through continuous assessment based on a series of assignments, with no final written examinations. This suits learners who excel in practical application and sustained coursework.

Expert University Guidance

A significant strength of our Sixth Form lies in the exceptional, individualised support pupils receive throughout the university application process. Our comprehensive PSHE programme is specifically designed to help pupils submit the strongest possible applications. Tailored support is extensive: aspiring Oxbridge candidates benefit from a dedicated coordinator and preparation including an “Away Day” visit often to Oxford or Cambridge.

Similarly, our Pre-Med course prepares those aiming for Medicine or Veterinary Science. Specialist guidance is also provided for US university applications. Tutors meticulously guide pupils through personal statement drafts, while references draw on insights from a wide range of staff. Our Head of Sixth Form dedicates considerable time and effort to ensuring pupils secure places on the best possible courses.
