Johnny Mercer MP addressed the Plymouth College Politics Society hours after the momentous news that the UK had voted to leave the EU.

He started by expressing his disappointment at the result and his preference that David Cameron had not resigned. He answered questions on the future of the UK nations, the European Union, the UK economy and the Conservative Party. He was keen to play down the implications of the result suggesting people should stop resigning and go home to mow the grass. He was particularly impressed by the insightful questions from Year 7 students. This is the final Politics Society Talk of the year, and it was an impressive talk with which to finish.

In a Mock Referendum, Plymouth College voted strongly to remain within the European Union. The overall result of staff and students saw Remain earn 65% of the vote and Leave 35%. The most Europhile group was the Lower Sixth, while the most Eurosceptic group was Year 7. A total of 360 votes were cast following a short sharp campaign led by Lower Sixth students debating the key issues in assemblies.
