Academic Senior School

In the last week before the half term break, our Plymouth College pupils have been shining in their online learning in both their lessons and their after-school clubs! We're so proud of the maturity of all of our pupils, especially in the way they have handled taking to online learning over this first half term of the calendar year.

Maths

During the last week or so, our Year 8 class have been studying angle rules in shapes with Dr Norris and finished off this half term with a fun investigation of these angles. Paper folding and origami was used to create various triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons. The angles were then measured and compared to their expectations and calculations.

History

Year 9 have been working in groups to produce a piece of propaganda for the British Government in WW2. They looked at evacuation, the blackout and rationing. Some students did radio broadcasts, whilst others created posters. They then had to 'sell' their idea to Mrs Chubb as the Prime Minister, through a group sales pitch so that she could pick the best campaigns for the country.

Not only did this prove to be a lot of fun but it helped with communication skills and source analysis, both of which will be essential for those choosing to do History at GCSE next year.

Design Technology

In Design Technology this week, our Year 9 pupils have been completing some development tasks for their bike docking station designs. They evaluated their docking station designs and used the SCAMPER technique to make creative changes. It's great to see our Year 9 pupils creating incredible work and develop their ideas to produce innovative products. Here is a timelapse of one of our pupil's work:

Photography

Our GCSE Photography pupils have been busy all half term, both taking photos and editing their work to either perfect their editing techniques, try out new methods and add to their final GCSE portfolios and to say their work is outstanding is an understatement! Here is an example of the Photoshop techniques of blending two photos together to create this piece entitled Illusions (left) a photo that uses the Light Painting technique with a slow shutter speed (middle), and a portraiture piece entitled Myself (right).

Art

In our Art lessons and after school clubs this half term, our GCSE pupils have been busy creating their final pieces for their GCSE Fine Art. Some of our pupils have used a mixture of mixed media and 3D collage to produce their final pieces to be added to their portfolio. In Manga, Drawing and Cartooning Club with Mrs Sullivan for Years 7, 8 and 9, they have been practicing their drawing of all styles and have been practicing their painting. Our Year 7 pupil Josh even created the beautiful portrait 'Benji' to be submitted to the Great Big Art Exhibition, that is being promoted by artist Antony Gormley.
