Plymouth College Year 7s have raised £1000 so that a boy in Tanzania can go to school. Over the last four months they have raised money for the Banana Tree Project through sponsored events, raffles, cake sales and a mufti day.
Steven Mautula has spent time living on the streets of Mwanza in Tanzania and has struggled to stay in school because he has no money to pay for fees, a uniform and books. However, as a direct result of the Year 7s' efforts, he has started school again and is now working hard at his studies. He is described by the Headmaster at his school as "hard-working and very bright" and certainly deserves the opportunity to learn at school.
The Banana Tree Project was set up by Plymouth College's Head of History, Ed Beavington. Last year's Year 7s supported another Tanzanian pupil, Asha Hassan, who is also performing strongly and enjoying her studies. More information about the charity can be found at www.bananatreeproject.org
