Royal Navy Pilots, James Birchall and André Milne who met as 13-year-olds at Plymouth College, arrived in style last week by landing a Sea King helicopter on the school playing field.
The two 37 year old Lieutenant Commanders from the Commando Helicopter Force at the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton completed the grueling Marathon Des Sables race across the Sahara Desert earlier this year to raise money for charity. Described as 'the toughest foot-race on earth', James and André undertook the challenge to raise thousands of pounds for The Children's Trust. Plymouth College supported James and André by raising £400 from a cake sale and mufti-day.
The Children's Trust is a national charity providing care, education and therapy to children with multiple disabilities and complex health needs across the UK. It also provides rehabilitation for children following acquired brain injury giving them the best opportunity to succeed at home and school (www.thechildrenstrust.org.uk). The two family men felt a huge affinity to the cause, not least of all due to the great work they both witnessed during their visit to the Trust.
With the whole school community gathered to welcome them, the former Plymouth College pupils talked to students about the highs and lows of the epic 154 mile race, which saw temperatures frequently exceed 45°C. Headmaster, Dr Simon Wormleighton, presented a cheque on behalf of the school. Pupils also had the chance to have a guided tour of the helicopter, with some of the Plymouth College CCF cadets taking to the air on a short flight over the city.
Senior cadet and Head Girl, Katie Davies-Gregory, was on the passenger list for the flight.
"It was great to welcome James and André back to the school", said Katie. Going up in the helicopter was such an amazing experience - the view of Plymouth was spectacular.
"Their talk about the Marathon Des Sables was fascinating and I am in awe of what they have achieved both during the race itself and the money they have raised for such a good cause. We are delighted that we have been able to support two former pupils in this way and we thank James and André very much for taking the time to visit us."
