Plymouth College has been shortlisted in three categories in the Telegraph/Aviva School Sports Matters Awards 2012.

Olympic Champion, Ruta Meilutyte, 15, is up for Female Pupil of the Year.  The swimmer took the world by storm when she beat a world-class field to take gold in the 100m breaststroke in London 2012.

Tom Daley, 18, not only won an Olympic bronze medal, but has also picked up the World Series, European and British titles this year.  He is shortlisted in the Male Pupil of the Year category.

Plymouth College is also nominated for the Independent School of the Year Award.  As well as Ruta and Tom's success, the school saw two other pupils compete in London 2012, has a European Junior Swimming Champion and age group British Champions in swimming, triathlon, tetrathlon, pentathlon and fencing.  A number of pupils have received international selections and broken a range of sports records.

School Sport Matters is a campaign initiated by The Daily Telegraph seven years ago, with Aviva as a sponsorship partner, to celebrate everything that is exemplary in school sport and physical education. The newspaper receives hundreds of nominations from schools around the country each year.  The prestigious awards event, that will be attended by lots of top sports stars, is being held on Wednesday 14 November at Lord's Cricket Ground in London.

"I am delighted that we have been nominated in three categories at these top school sports awards", said Plymouth College Headmaster, Dr Simon Wormleighton.  "This has been a phenomenal year for Plymouth College.  We offer a range of sports for all abilities but the pinnacle of 2012 has undoubtedly been the performances of our elite athletes in the London Olympic Games."

This is not the first time Plymouth College has featured in these awards.  Last year the Plymouth College swimming team were runners up in Team of the Year and in 2009, Tom Daley won Male Pupil of the Year.
