Plymouth College 3 – Truro College Rugby Academy 9
Plymouth College 1st XV may have lost their unbeaten record, but they came out of this match with huge credit. Against opponents who boast a star studded line up, the smaller Plymouth College side tore into their opponents from the off, causing the visitors to withstand several telling line breaks and territorial pressure.
In a high tempo first half, the only points went to Plymouth, with James Burke slotting a straightforward penalty after Truro infringed in front of their posts. Unfortunately other Plymouth chances were unable to be turned into points.
The second half saw Truro come out strong and their greater size started to tell with Plymouth players being forced to make tackle after tackle. Possession for Plymouth was limited during the first 20 minutes of the second half and Truro levelled then took the lead with three penalty kicks. Despite a valiant effort in the final quarter, Plymouth were unable to come up with the crucial score to secure what could have been a famous victory.
Credit must go to all the players for their commitment, courage and application during this match, but they should also take great heart from the fact that on another day they could have seized victory. The big lesson from a match like this surely has to be that when games are tight every opportunity has to be taken.
