Working this year with students from Plymouth High School for Girls, Plymouth College Young Enterprise company, Affinity, has been presented with the trophy for the best overall company in Plymouth. This is the fourth consecutive year that a Young Enterprise company with Plymouth College pupils has walked away with this accolade.
Affinity won the top prize this year after the success of their book, ‘Prambles’, a guide to family-friendly walks in the area. They subsidized the printing of the book by creating ‘make your own Christmas crackers’ and ‘paint your own Christmas decorations’, which were sold at Young Enterprise trade fairs.
More than 200 copies of the book, retailing at £3, have already been sold through Waterstones, Tourist Office and Pixieland Day Nurseries. The current profit stands at £550, which could double if all copies are sold. As well, Ordnance Survey and Bossiny Books are reportedly looking at the possibility of buying the book from the team in return for royalties.
In addition to the top prize, Affinity also won trophies for marketing, innovation, administration and the Christmas and Spring trade fairs. Another Plymouth College team, Green Zebra, won the award for quality.
Teacher in charge of Young Enterprise, Jonathan Shields, said: “Affinity have done amazingly well and stand a real chance of success at the Devon final. Plymouth College pupils have been members of the top Plymouth company for the last four years and have won numerous trophies, but this year has been particularly outstanding with Affinity achieving a record six awards. I’m really looking forward to seeing how far they can go with this.”
