Year 5 had an exciting two-day trip to environmental adventure centre, Camp Kernow. Based near Truro in Cornwall, the Camp is dedicated to reconnecting and engaging children with the natural environment and inspiring them to live more sustainably.
The off-grid centre brings green education to life by harnessing renewable energy and employing sustainable technologies including composting toilets, reed-beds, a solar powered water pumping and filtration system and biomass-fuelled showers. Year 5 were able to understand and experience first-hand a new way of living in balance with nature, its ecological systems and resources.
The packed programme of adventurous, challenging and exploratory activities included food foraging, archery and shelter building. The children particularly enjoyed staying overnight, sleeping in various structures such as a hand-built yurt, geodome, mongolian ger, tipi, traditional bell tent and even an upturned boat hull!
A great success, the Camp will become a regular fixture on the Year 5 curriculum.
